What Happened to us?…over the years…in the technoworld!

I was reflecting the other day on how technology has eased our lives and enslaved us at the same time. How we turn to it for almost everything including monitoring our steps and sleep quality.
I have collected a number of timepieces over the years which I haven’t worn in 2 years since I got myself a smartwatch. I just haven’t seen the point to go back to them when my smartwatch reminds me to drink water, clocks my steps, updates my physical activities and helps me meet my weekly vitality goals🤣 scoring me miles for a smoothie at Kauai.
I was itching for a hike and I quickly browsed through “AllTrails” app to find my next trail. As I was walking in the woods with some strangers, it came to mind that I had just gotten on an app to walk the (mhlaba), how odd.
We got to reach the beautiful serene waterfall for a mini yoga session, again a quick thought buzzed through my mind that the times have really changed. We pay for everything even things that seems to be so basic like quietening myself.
You fancy a takeout, Uber eats is at your service.
You want to make a purchase from clothes to furniture and more, there is an app for it.
You want some explanation of the world you turn to Google.
You want to know how things work, there is YouTube.
You want to still your mind and be serene you open Calm.
You want to talk, you pay for a therapist
You want to be in touch with nature, you pay for a hike (through a club or something close).
You are bored you binge on Hulu, Netflix and Showmax amongst others (I must confess I’m here, “The Wife” on Showmax has been stealing my sleep lately ☺️)
You want to redecorate your space, you check Houzz and Pinterest.
You travel to an unfamiliar place, you open Maze or Google Maps and if you are lucky activate the build in GPS in your car.
You feel a little bit off tune , you check your health app for stress levels
You want to try a new recipe, you open Tasty.
Looking for love and connections, you sign up with Tinder.
You want to share pictures, you dump them on Instagram.
You are on for a quick update on current affairs, outside News24 there is an easy and helpful, though sometimes hectic birdie Twitter that will give you an update in a flick. I mean I got the country’s family meeting updates via Twitter and Facebook.
Here I am now writing and I’ve turned to the internet.
What used to be letters is now an instant WhatsApp, Snapchat or email. Even my photos apply a filter in seconds.
You need to search for a new word, you easily look it up in a dictionary app. We do not own Oxford dictionaries, encyclopedias and Readers Digest any more.
Even the Holy Book in all versions is easily accessible on our smart phones. We recently migrated from Edana to Google Classroom for school work and sharing learning materials.
There are so many new technologies and apps to keep up with and this can be overwhelming at times.
When was the last time you had visitors and you shared with them a photo album taking them through each scene? Fortunately I still do that. I collected our family pictures and revamped them to welcome and entertain my close guests.
In embracing how things have evolved with technology et al, maybe let’s take it in, in how our lives have changed and challenge ourselves to do just that one thing in this new year that we used to ravel in growing up.
Write an old fashioned pen and paper letter to your bestie.
Pull out that song book and physical vision board.
Play things like proper hide and seek (as opposed to blue ticking and ghosting), board games, diketo, boleke ba mmaipatile, kgati etc
What other games did you play? Have you made time to teach your children this games? Or we’ll stick to Minecraft, Fortnite, Robux and Candy Crush?
There are so many apps nowadays that we rely on to make life a bit easy. We live in a beautiful era of technology and I love it.
At what extend does technology rule your world?
Here are my top 5 Apps;
1. Takealot and Sixty60
2. Flo
3. 22Seven
4. Spotify
5. Instagram
Which apps are at the top of your list?
Do you think this has brought the much needed independence or control?
Do you think we can reconnect and put the apps away?
I’ve recently learned about digital detox and I intend on practicing it atleast once a week on Sunday afternoons.
While I enjoy automated payments via my banking app and ability to transact anywhere anytime without keeping those long queues (especially month end at some specific banks🤣🤣🤣 I kid, I kid), I still cannot wrap myself around ebooks and audio books and my Apple Music is of no use (I’m hopeless with music). I however cannot wait for a driverless car and having a robot clean my house.
Let’s hear from you in the comments. Seems like toilet paper is not a necessity anymore as far as WiFi is.
And please tell my son we don’t have to video call whilst in the same house. I find it easy to just walk to a person and chat. Oh you should also see the text messages and voice notes I get in one day from the Guccis (totally unnecessary 🥰)
Another Beautiful Wondrous Wednesday
First drop of 2022
Happy New Year!
